I’m a professional dancer, a dance teacher, and a choreographer.
I’m also a writer.
I am Groot.
And I am a keyblade wielder, a demigod, a dragon rider, a Flying Grayson, a knuckle-headed ninja, a soul reaper, a Jedi, a witch, a hippie, a Winchester, an Autobot, an owner of hairy babies, a walking-talking skeleton, a fairy, and most importantly: a swashbuckling pirate of the high seas.
But at night I am vengeance. I am Batman.
Ha. I wish.
In the “real world” I grew up as a competitive dancer and I grew up to make a career out of it. Dance has always been my first passion, but through the years writing became another thing I found myself to be just as passionate about. Making art and creating stories have been lifelong passions. I earned my BFA as a double major in dance and creative writing from UW-Milwaukee 2015, and just recently I earned my MFA in creative writing from Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL. My graduate thesis was a full-length YA Fantasy novel named Pyxis Nautica— a story that had been brewing in my head for many, many years.
It all came to life in the final draft that I wrote entirely during the pandemic lockdown, and then it went on to receive the department’s Thesis Award for 2022.
I continue to write stories based on that novel and in that world, and that’s where The Wild Tales of Squall and Chubasco came from. The Wild Tales is a prequel, an introduction, to the story of Pyxis Nautica.
I still live in my hometown in Southeast Wisconsin, a perfect middle-ground between Chicago and Milwaukee so that I can get to dance gigs in both cities.
Check out the wild adventures of Ferdy, Johnny, and little Theodore in The Wild Tales of Squall and Chubasco, the wordy rantings in my blog, or send me a message to chat!
Many thanks, and may no seas fare smooth,
Andi May
